A SOFT WORD MADE FROM HARD THINGS

Fluffy was created in 2016 after Scoobafish was selected by Adobe to participate in WTFIT, a one-week creative challenge. A box containing unrelated industrial objects arrived with a single assigned word: “fluffy”. Every supplied item had to be incorporated into the finished work, with only glue and paint permitted as additional materials.

Rather than illustrating softness literally, Scoobafish constructed a memorial to a small owl. Safety pins, metal discs, clamps, cables and mechanical components form its body and the surrounding outline of a tombstone. Beneath the owl, a hand-built inscription remembers an affectionate creature that has become “stiff and cold”, setting tenderness against the physical hardness of the materials.

The work transforms an imposed word and a collection of disconnected objects into a single narrative image. Humour, affection and mortality coexist within the assemblage, while the contrast between soft meaning and rigid matter becomes the conceptual centre of the piece.
