El Pibe de Oro portrays Diego Maradona through a material process in which discarded plastics become a painter’s palette.
The figure was constructed using the original colours of the recovered objects rather than painting them to match the image. Every tone—from the blue of the jersey and the shadows of the skin to the black of the hair—was found within materials that had already completed another life.
From a distance, the fragments merge into a recognisable portrait. At close range, the image breaks apart into containers, household components and obsolete plastic forms. Their previous functions remain visible, allowing the work to shift between likeness and accumulation.
Maradona’s image belongs not only to sport, but to collective memory. The work does not attempt to resolve the contradictions of his public life. Instead, it focuses on the persistence of an imperfect icon, reconstructed through materials marked by use, damage and transformation.
By refusing additional colour on the assembled figure, El Pibe de Oro turns the search for discarded materials into a chromatic discipline: the waste itself determines the possibilities and limits of the portrait.
