Orange Sign captures a decommissioned traffic sign in the middle of a visual transformation. The lower half becomes the juicy interior of an orange, while the upper section preserves the faded surface, horizontal band and weathered edge of the original sign.
Rather than concealing its source material, the work makes the boundary between object and illusion its central subject. Pigment and translucent resin create the colour and moisture of citrus flesh, but corrosion, scratches and exposed metal remain visible. The sculpture exists simultaneously as a piece of fruit and as evidence of the industrial object from which it was made.
