Since I was a young boy, I have always tried to raise awareness about environmental pollution through my art. The artwork represents an abyssal fish, built entirely from plastics I collected from Sardinian beaches. I wanted to capture that dramatic moment when the creature, turning on its bioluminescent light to attract prey, suddenly realizes it is immersed in a sea contaminated with plastic.
Plastic pollution is reaching the deepest parts of the ocean, more than 1,000 kilometers from the mainland, emerging as one of the most serious threats to marine ecosystems. There are still tons of plastic washed up on the beaches waiting to be picked up by someone...
Artist Maurizio Sergiusti collecting plastic waste from Sardinian beach for environmental art project Plastic from the Abyss
Every piece of plastic I collected tells a story of abandonment and negligence, but also of possibility for rebirth through art. My mission is to transform what we consider "trash" into a powerful message of awareness.

The transformation process begins in the studio. Each fragment becomes part of a larger vision - a deep-sea creature that will reveal the horror of our negligence through its own illuminating light.

It's a terrifying moment of awareness: the same light that should guarantee its survival becomes the instrument that reveals the horror of pollution surrounding it. Bioluminescence, one of nature's most magical phenomena, transforms into a lantern that illuminates our negligence.

Golden illuminated moment revealing plastic pollution in abyssal fish environmental art sculpture
I chose to build the fish itself from plastic waste because it represents how these materials have now tragically become part of the marine life cycle. The fish has become what is killing it. Through this sculpture, I want to give voice to the marine abyss, demonstrating how awareness can emerge even from degradation.
