Plastic from the Abyss imagines an anglerfish emerging from the darkness of the ocean floor into an environment transformed by human waste.
The work began with materials collected from Sardinian beaches. Plastic fragments, cables and discarded objects were assembled to construct the fish, while a painted sequence of concentric bands creates the sensation of depth and spreading light.
A real light bulb replaces the luminous prey associated with the anglerfish. The creature appears drawn towards it, only to reveal a seabed inhabited by the remnants of human consumption. Light therefore becomes both attraction and warning: it guides the viewer into the scene while exposing what has entered even the most remote marine ecosystems.
The fish is built from the same discarded matter that threatens its habitat. This material contradiction lies at the centre of the work. Plastic is not used merely to represent pollution; it becomes the body of the creature forced to live within it.
Plastic from the Abyss explores the distance between human activity and its consequences. What disappears from sight does not cease to exist: it travels, accumulates and resurfaces in environments we imagine to be beyond our reach.
